Reflexology and the Effects
Effects of reflexology are many and positive. Reduced stress, increased relaxation, feelings of increased energy, and cures for many acute and chronic conditions, stress related conditions, sleep disorders, sports injuries,
improved mental alertness, stimulation of creativity, and better inter relationships in body systems. As a first step into massage reflexology is known to have many benefits.
In reflexology patients are asked to relax and to expose their feet to the reflexologist all in an atmosphere of soft lighting, soft music and oils to provide a pleasant aroma. Clients often become drowsy and fall asleep, and many describe the experience as the most relaxing part of their day, feeling refreshed after the treatment. Since about 75% of all illnesses are stress related including headaches, stiffness of the neck and shoulders, and lowered immune systems leading to frequent colds and flue, reflexology as a method of relieving stress is popular as a preventative method of health.
Reflexologists apply pressure on areas they call reflex zones that are found on the feet and the hands and which they believe correspond to various parts of the body. Pressure is applied through thumb, ginger and hand techniques. Reflex areas such as the foot and hands have over 7,000 nerve endings that are stimulated by applied pressure. It is believed that the body responds positively to this applied pressure. If nothing else the sensation is considered relaxing and pleasant by most people.
In reflexology it is believed that at times nerve endings have crystalline deposits that build up and block pathways, and that the lymph system is improved through reflexology.
It is also believed that it brings balance to the Chi or Ki, and the flow of energy along the meridians of the body.
Reflexology is practiced throughout Asia, where foot massage or foot reflexology is very popular. In Western countries both foot and hand reflexology are most common. Also specialized equipment such as rollers are often used, as well as whole body vacuum cans, socks printed with reflex zone footmaps allowing people to locate their reflexology zones themselves, and other equipment. While many health professionals disagree on the positive medical affects of reflexology there is little disagreement that at the very least it provides relaxation and stress reduction. And if it is able to achieve those benefits then most people can benefit from reflexology.
